#31 Keep Left

Buckle up, Buttercups!

"These two words spell safety!
Don’t be like Percy."

Which two words?

#31 KEEP LEFT
A lot has changed since this film was made in 1949, but keeping left (in NZ and other left-side driving countries) is still crucial:

* A head-on crash is still one of the worst you can have
* White centre lines are just paint - with no magical powers to protect you
* If an oncoming vehicle comes onto your side of the road for any reason, already being on the left could give you more chance to react safely
* Keeping left allows drivers behind you to overtake more safely as they can better see the road ahead, and it should, in theory, leave your vehicle with more room as they pass

Who's Percy?
Percy's behaviour seems exaggerated, but every day you can see people hugging that centre line with no room for error, crossing it momentarily, or repeatedly due to texting or other distractions, or even forgetting altogether which side of the road they're supposed to be on.

If you keep left, then you're avoiding being like Percy, but you're also giving yourself a better chance of avoiding Percy coming towards you.

Something to do at all costs.

Buckle up, buttercups! And keep left.

PS - Please share my Buckle Up Buttercup tips! The more we talk about road safety and what we can do to keep ourselves and others safe – the safer our roads will be. Things that might be obvious to you might still be unknown to your friends or family.

PPS - If your name happens to BE Percy, please accept my humble apologies! Blame partly lies however with the New Zealand Transport Department from 1949 and the New Zealand Film Archives (video credit) :-)
