Buckle up, buttercups! You can never be too careful driving around schools!
#32 Keep cool around schools
Do you know the speed limit around a school bus stopped to let children get on or off?
That's in BOTH directions past the bus
It might seem very slow, particularly on rural roads with much higher limits before the school, but bear in mind that at 20km/hr, it could still take you 8 metres of road to react and stop.
*** During the busy times before and after school especially, you might need to drive even slower, and not just around buses. Take care around crossings, and cars stopped for drop-off and pick-ups as well.
*** Children can be excited, distracted, or just plain unpredictable! It's your responsibility as a driver to reduce risk.
*** Go another way to avoid school zones in the mornings and around 3pm if you can.
*** There could be children walking to/from school or riding bikes, and more learner drivers around at that time as well.
*** If you're travelling an unfamiliar town or neighbourhood, schools or preschools might 'pop up' where you don't expect them. Stay aware and keep an eye out for signs that a school is nearby.
*** Some schools have a 40km/hr school zone, reinforced with signs.
*** Actively scan and be prepared to stop at any time.
As always, be considerate and kind when driving and parking, but especially around schools :-)
